Uncross the Stars

A man attempting to honor his wife’s dying wish struggles to decipher what she meant when she asked him to “uncross the stars” in this gentle comedy-drama starring Daniel Gilles. In the wake of his wife’s untimely death, grieving widower Troy Harper (Gilles) honors his promise to construct a porch for his Aunt Hilda (Barbara Hershey). A resident of the Happy Valley retirement community in Arizona, Hilda lives next door to irascible Bobby (Ron Perlman) and a collection of elderly ladies who help Troy to make sense of his wife’s puzzling final request.

The Sensation of Sight

First-time American writer director Aaron Wiederspahn’s moody drama The Sensation of Sight concerns Finn, a middle-aged English teacher caught up in the unrelenting throes of a mid-life crisis. Driven by the guilt associated with a tragic incident for which he considers himself responsible, he drops out of his daily life and routine, and takes to selling encyclopedias. The past continues to haunt him, however, filling his days with irrepressible anxiety, robbing his nights of sleep, and driving him inexorably toward a full self-awakening.

Captivity

Vatel director Roland Joffé teams with screenwriters Larry Cohen and Joseph Tura to adapt an original story by Cohen concerning a fashion model (Elisha Cuthbert) and her chauffeur, who are kidnapped and held captive by a sadistic serial killer. Jennifer Tree (Cuthbert) is America’s sweetheart; a top fashion model and ubiquitous cover girl who is adored by millions, Jennifer possesses all of the wealth and power that comes with being a natural, world-class beauty. Every girl wants to be Jennifer, and every man wants to have her — one more than all others combined. That man has been lying in wait for precisely the right moment to strike, and when Jennifer makes the fateful mistake of stepping out on her own at a Soho charity event, he finally sees the opportunity to take possession of his most prized object. Drugged, taken, and placed in a cell, where she is forced to endure unspeakable mental and physical torture, Jennifer struggles against her twisted tormentor with every ounce of courage and fight that she has — but will it be enough for her to endure should her captor continue to maintain the upper hand? A controversial film long before it ever went into wide release, Captivity caused quite a stir when graphic, unapproved ads for the film appeared on billboards and taxicabs in New York and Los Angeles. Though representatives from Captivity’s releasing company After Dark Films claimed that the wrong materials were shipped to the printers and put up before they realized what had happened, public outcry was such that the MPAA saw fit to suspend the ratings process for the film. As a result, it quickly became apparent that Captivity would fail to procure an MPAA rating before its original target release date.

Masters of Horror: Dream Cruise

Premonition writer/director Norio Tsuruta directs iconic Japanese author Kôji Suzuki’s tale of open-water terror for the small screen as Showtime’s Masters of Horror series winds to a waterlogged close. Jack (Daniel Gillies) is an American lawyer working in Tokyo who is terrified of the sea. But a few small waves become the least of Jack’s worries when he and the wife of his powerful client Eiji enter into a dangerous affair. Later, when Eiji personally invites Jack to join the couple for an afternoon boating excursion into Tokyo Bay, the shaken lawyer reluctantly accepts. Little do Jack and Eiji’s wife realize that their greatest fears are about to become reality when a presumed pleasure cruise turns deadly personal.

Daniel Gillies, Biography

daniel gillies, daniel gillies biography, biography, bio

After coming of age in New Zealand and working very briefly in the Australian and Canadian film industries, Kiwi actor-turned-Hollywood hunk Daniel Gillies reportedly moved to Los Angeles with only 100 dollars in his pocket and began landing coveted A-list roles in seemingly no time at all; these included John Jameson — Mary Jane’s (Kirsten Dunst) love interest and Peter Parker’s (Tobey Maguire) romantic rival — in Spider-Man 2 (2004); and British vagabond Johnny Wickham in Gurinder Chadha’s musical romance adaptation of Jane Austen, Bride & Prejudice (2004). Gillies also played Ethan Biggs in Into the West (2005), Steven Spielberg’s miniseries about Manifest Destiny. In a much-publicized event, Gillies married Into the West co-star Rachael Leigh Cook that same year. In 2007, Gillies tackled dual roles within the horror genre. In Norio Tsuruta’s Masters of Horror: Dream Cruise, Gillies played Jack, an American attorney stationed in Tokyo who embarks on a quick trip to a watery grave. In Roland Joffé’s slasher movie Captivity, Gillies played a young man who blacks out and awakens alongside his girlfriend (Elisha Cuthbert), trapped in the basement of a torture-happy psychopath.
